In a Press Notice in April 2001, the Minister for Public Health announced new initiatives to modernise neonatal and antenatal screening. She advocated the formation of a new network of counsellors to provide support and information for pregnant women and their partners about screening during pregnancy, to ensure that expectant parents can make informed choices about which tests to have.

In the West Midlands the team is based within the 'Perinatal Institute' thus enabling support from peers specialising in Research, Public Health, Information Technology and Analytical expertise.
