The
Birmingham & Black Country Reducing
Perinatal Mortality Project is designed
to tackle perinatal mortality by enhancing community
maternity care. It corresponds
to the objectives of the BBC SHA strategy on
'Healthy

The B&BC data was updated within the
PIs regional Key Health Data report (September
2007), entitled
Stillbirth and infant mortality, West
Midlands 1997-2005: Trends, Factors, Inequalities

The project is outlined in the

The work is managed by a Project Team,
led by Toni Martin, and overseen by a Project
Board chaired by Paul Jennings, Chief Executive
of Walsall PCT |

Workshops and seminars are held on a number
of relevant topics. Presentations from these
meetings are archived here.
The project targets areas of greatest need by
enhancing community based maternity services.
A set of 5 key performance indicators have been
agreed:
- continuity of carer
- early booking
- detection of fetal growth restriction
- smoking cessation
- breastfeeding initiation
Definitions for the indicators have recently
been updated in line with the NHS West Midlands
"Investing for Health Project 2C - Perinatal
and Infant Mortality". The revised
definitions can be found here. |

A core
data index to support data collection and
calculation of the key process indicators has
also been agreed and is available here |

The West Midlands extended core dataset
includes demographics and social factors as well
as the data needed for the WM key indicators.
Current version (1.8, July 2010) includes 96
data items and is available here. |

Confidential Enquiry: In addition
to the collection of core data, a confidential
enquiry has been conducted. Following B&BC
wide consultation, the protocol was agreed by
the Project Team on 13 July 2006, to include stillbirths
with fetal growth restriction. The protocol
can be viewed here.

The report of the Confidential Enquiry
was released in July 2007 and can be seen here.
Currently, PI is conducting
a series of feedback sessions with individual
trusts and have commenced work on the main action
points of the report. |

The initiative to enhance community maternity
care is being continued in Birmingham as part
of the Birmingham NRF project / Floor Target Action
Plan. A mapping exercise of existing community
midwifery services was undertaken by PMA associates
in November 2005 - the report can be viewed here.
